Ford Historical Paperwork

Would Petty be good for Ford?

Would you believe Ford was strategizing if Richard Petty would be good for them back in 1967?

The ever ongoing discussions about what was happening during the Aero War years of 1968 through 1970 takes more twists and turns than a moonshiner’s escape from the Feds. It seems every time a question is raised about anything to do with the Talladega or Spoiler II there are two opposite rumors and both sound possible if not likely. Thanks to some of the individuals involved at the time we do know some parts of the stories as facts but other parts are pure speculation.

Today we will begin to document what we know and hope that this will help build a logical and documented paper trail as it relates to the design and building of our treasures.

Long time gatherer of historical Ford documents, respected show judge and manufacturer of rare restoration parts, Marty Burke has come into the possession of a wealth of historical paperwork. He is still sorting through boxes of it and as he discovers useful treasures he has offered to share them with our membership.

We maintain a digital library on this site for similar data that is available at any time to Team Members but this new data is far too valuable to limit access to so it is available to anyone to use in their own research. We encourage anyone else who has similar information to also share it with us for others in the Talladega Family to benefit from.

All of this new data and information will continue to be published on this page for everyone’s benefit as we obtain it and have time to organise it. I encourage everyone to use our Forum as a tool to discuss these documents and how they fit into the rumors and facts that we and others have already collected. I have another surprise on this topic that we will be sharing with you in a few weeks.

We have lots more to bring you but here is a start!

Is this the beginning of the Talladega/Spoiler II program?

Will it be a 427 or a Boss 429? Seems clear from this Ford memo.

In October of 1968 the details are beginning to take shape.

Richard

Some of my first and strongest memories from my childhood relate to cars. I still remember when things happened based on what car I was driving at the time. I grew up and lived in Iowa for nearly 40 years before moving to Southern California and now live in Tennessee. I was a Corvette fanatic for years but then re-discovered vintage American Muscle. My wife, Katrina, and I decided we wanted to focus on unique and rare muscle cars. After a lot of research we fell in love with the Ford Blue Oval Aero Cars. These were only built in 1969 and and aerodynamics became an important part of winning races. The only purpose of these limited production cars was to win NASCAR races using the Boss 429 and 427 power plants complimented with a special, wind cheating, aerodynamic body. The Ford Talladega and Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II are terrific and historic cars. This site is devoted to these car and their owners past and present. We provide an Online Registry for recording the long term history and ownership of every remaining Talladega, Spoiler and Spoiler II.
