How Many 1969 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler IIs are Left?

We previously gave you an update on the Ford Talladega and Mercury Cyclone Spoiler Registrations for this web site and today we will give you the numbers for the 1969 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II cars. So how many are left? For some reason this group of cars is a little more difficult to calculate because it seems owners don’t want to Register their cars. This group has by far the largest number of found cars that have not been Registered or are incomplete Registrations.

On July 14, 2018 we reviewed all of our Spoiler II Registrations noting condition and whether the car was a Cale Yarborough or Dan Gurney Special. Here are our findings.

Total Spoiler II cars Registered = 58; of which 31 were Cale Yarbough cars and 27 were Dan Gurney cars.

We also found 10 Cale Yarborough Specials and 7 Dan Gurney Specials that have been documented but not Registered. This suggests that there are at least a total of 75 1969 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II Specials still in existence. We have also documented that 6 Spoiler IIs have been destroyed, 3 each of Cale Yarborough and Dan Gurney. We also have documented one Spoiler II clone.

Condition; Cale Yarborough Spoiler II:

#1 = 0

#2 = 6

#3 = 8

#4 = 5

#5 = 12

#6 = 0

Total = 31

Condition; Dan Gurney Spoiler II:

#1 = 3

#2 = 4

#3 = 5

#4 = 4

#5 = 9

#6 = 2

Total = 27

How many more do you think are out there and why do so many owners fail to Register their cars? Leave your comments below.

Some of my first and strongest memories from my childhood relate to cars. I still remember when things happened based on what car I was driving at the time. I grew up and lived in Iowa for nearly 40 years before moving to Southern California and now live in Tennessee. I was a Corvette fanatic for years but then re-discovered vintage American Muscle. My wife, Katrina, and I decided we wanted to focus on unique and rare muscle cars. After a lot of research we fell in love with the Ford Blue Oval Aero Cars. These were only built in 1969 and and aerodynamics became an important part of winning races. The only purpose of these limited production cars was to win NASCAR races using the Boss 429 and 427 power plants complimented with a special, wind cheating, aerodynamic body. The Ford Talladega and Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II are terrific and historic cars. This site is devoted to these car and their owners past and present. We provide an Online Registry for recording the long term history and ownership of every remaining Talladega, Spoiler and Spoiler II.

  1. I’ll bet there might be 6 left to be found and that’s probably being overly optimistic. Some of those may be a total wreck. But this is a big country with a lot of hiding places.
    Owners not coming forth? There are probably a million reasons why.

  2. Add another Cale car to the list.Its been off the road since 1971.The front end has had it but I will be able to sort it all out.It was owned by a well known spoiler II guy and he just never got around to listing it.I am sure there are more.They keep popping up from time to time.
