Beep Beep Your Ass!!!

Do you remember the anti Road Runner decals from back in the late 60s and early 70s? They were the unofficial Ford response to the Road Runner/Superbird cartoons being used by the MOPAR folks. It seems our Bill Holbrook had a little to do with this.

As Bill tells it:

“During one of my frequent visits to the High Performance Warehouse at Holman Moody where I directed warehouse operations I received a phone call from Jacque Passino, Director of the Ford Performance Group. It was after the 1968 Daytona Beach Race. Ford had won, and Jacque inquired if I was aware of the large quantity of the “Beep Beep” decals stored in the warehouse. Evidently my boss was somehow involved in the design and procurement of the decals. I told him Junior Martin advised me of the their existence, but they were not on the inventory. I had acquired a few packets prior to the February race at Daytona without his knowledge. I thought this was a cool decal and racing competition between Ford and Chrysler was heating up.

While out for dinner I found Ronnie Householder’s (Director of Chrysler’s Racing Group), rental car parked at a local Daytona Restaurant. I proceeded to plaster a large quantity of the “Beep Beep” decals on his rental vehicle, including the driver’s windshield area.

This brings the reason for Jacque’s phone call; Ford’s office of General Council had evidently been contacted by the copy right owners of the decal characters involved and advised Ford to cease and desist any further activities with the decal or suffer grave consequences. (I suspect Ronnie may have turned us in, bless his heart). Jacque advised me I was personally to take the entire supply of decals to the nearest barrel and incinerate the evidence immediately. I destroyed them as directed after putting another few packets in my brief case.”

So if you are too young to have ever seen one of these you have Ford management to thank for it. If you have seen one of these it just might be Bill Holbrook you should thank. If you would like to place one of these vintage decals on your Ford product before the long arm of the law again closes them down, here is your chance. I have a very few available in our Online Store for the unreasonable price of $3.00 plus $1.00 shipping for 1 or more decals; yours will be without the Bill Holbrook autograph. You also have your choice of sticker for surface mount or cling for inside window mounting.

If you are interested I can also do a custom sized poster style print in larger sizes. Email me at rfleener@Comcast.net with your request for a quote.

Some of my first and strongest memories from my childhood relate to cars. I still remember when things happened based on what car I was driving at the time. I grew up and lived in Iowa for nearly 40 years before moving to Southern California and now live in Tennessee. I was a Corvette fanatic for years but then re-discovered vintage American Muscle. My wife, Katrina, and I decided we wanted to focus on unique and rare muscle cars. After a lot of research we fell in love with the Ford Blue Oval Aero Cars. These were only built in 1969 and and aerodynamics became an important part of winning races. The only purpose of these limited production cars was to win NASCAR races using the Boss 429 and 427 power plants complimented with a special, wind cheating, aerodynamic body. The Ford Talladega and Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II are terrific and historic cars. This site is devoted to these car and their owners past and present. We provide an Online Registry for recording the long term history and ownership of every remaining Talladega, Spoiler and Spoiler II.

  1. My father Fran Hernandez worked with Jacque and he brought home hundreds of these stickers. We were kids and plastered them all over the place. If you still have any of these I would love to buy one or more.
