Taking a Talladega to Talladega by Dr. John Craft
One of the most fun things you can do with a Talladega or Spoiler II is take it to an all Ford Show or better yet take it to Talladega for one of the Reunions traditionally held on the 5th or 10th year cycle of the first running of the track. These cars and the MOPAR Daytona and Plymouth Superbirds were the stars of the track’s first event. Of course this doesn’t include the biggest story of that first event which was the driver’s boycott because of safety concerns but that is an entirely different subject.
The story below was printed in the March 1990 issue of MuscleCars magazine and written by Dr. John Craft. It is an interesting account of the first reunion, the 20th, held in 1989 at the Speedway. He drove from his home in Florida to Talladega in the summer heat! Read and enjoy. You can click on the images below and then click on them again to enlarge them for easier reading.

What a great article!
Extremely well written. I felt like I was caravanning along with Dr. Craft in my own Big T. The only thing missing was a description of a bug striking the windshield at warp speed. (Did you know that a gnat will achieve a diameter of about 6 inches, or more, when struck at a sufficient velocity – somewhere well north of 120?)
I have to agree with Dr. Craft’s comment about these cars really liking 80, or slightly more, on the road.
Thanks for sharing.
